Why scentwork is brilliant for pet dogs

Your dog's nose is their superpower. Here's why giving it a job is one of the best things you can do for a happier, calmer, more confident dog.

Every dog has a superpower: their nose. Scentwork gives that superpower a job, and the results go far beyond a few fun sessions on a Sunday morning.

A tired mind is a happy dog

A mentally stimulated dog is usually a happier dog. Searching for a scent makes your dog think, problem-solve and concentrate, which can tire them out in a way a long walk doesn’t.

It builds confidence and calm

Every successful find gives your dog a real confidence boost. Sniffing is naturally calming, and having a clear task gives dogs a sense of purpose. It’s a great outlet for energy that can help prevent unwanted behaviours at home.

You become a team

Working together on a fun, rewarding task strengthens your bond. You learn to read your dog, and your dog learns that you’re the most interesting thing in the field.

Any dog can do it

You don’t need any experience, and age is no barrier. Dogs from 7 months to 13 years old have taken part in our UK Sniffer Dogs courses so far. The Bronze course covers:

  • Scent identification: teaching your dog the target scent
  • Searching skills: how to search an area methodically
  • Scent indication: how your dog tells you they’ve found it

Courses run outdoors in Wednesbury, which makes them ideal for dogs who need a little more room.
